The Order for Worship

5th Sunday of Easter

May 10, 2020

Prelude                                                 Processional                               William Mathias

Call to Worship

Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

We long for abiding peace and friendship that renews our souls.

Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

We seek wisdom that endures and guidance for our journey.

Jesus says, “Where I am, there you may be also.”

We come to encounter Christ. Let us worship our God!

*Hymn #248                                      Christ is Risen!                                        Hymn to Joy

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Holy God, in baptism you claim us as beloved children and set us apart as
witnesses to your love. At times we forget we bear the mark of your brace and act
as if you have no claim on our lives. You call us to the risky work of justice and
peace, but we default to what is comfortable and safe. You call us to ministries of
generosity and compassion, but we make little room in our busy lives for gestures
of mercy beyond moments of spontaneous kindness. Wash us again with your
grace and transform us by your Word, that we might proclaim your good news in
   word and deed.

Assurance of Pardon

Passing of Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

   And also with you.

                                                                                                          Lori Hoffman, alto solo

Christ rose up from the dead, and God’s grace will bear my spirit home.

They crucified my Savior upon a common cross
and God’s grace will bear my spirit home.

And Joseph begged his body, and laid it in the tomb,

and God’s grace will bear my spirit home.

An angel came from heaven and rolled away the stone,

and God’s grace will bear my spirit home.

Oh, Mary, she came running and found an empty tomb,

and God’s grace will bear my spirit home.

Pastoral Prayer, Prayers of the People, and Call to Commitment and Offering

Offertory                                         Come, Risen Lord                                     Martha Shaffer

Derek Dahlke and Lori Hoffman, duet

   Come, risen Lord, and deign to be our guest;

nay, let us be Thy guests; the feast is Thine.

Thyself at Thine own board make manifest in Thine own sacrament of bread and wine.

We meet, as in that upper room they met; Thou at the table, blessing, yet dost stand:

"This is my body": so Thou givest yet: faith still receives the cup as from Thy hand.

One body we, one body who partake, one church united in communion blest.

One name we bear, one bread of life we break,
with all Thy saints on earth and saints at rest.

One with each other, Lord, for one in Thee, Who art one Savior and one living Head.

Then open Thou our eyes that we may see; be known to us in breaking of the bread.

                                                                                                                                   -G.W. Briggs

*Easter Doxology                                                                                          Lasst Uns Erfreuen

   Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!

Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!

Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Invitation

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

   The Lord be with you.

   And also with you.

   Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Words of Institution

The Lord’s Prayer

   Our Father in heaven,

     hallowed be your name,

     your kingdom come,

     your will be done,

     on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

   Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

     and deliver us from evil.

   For the kingdom, the power,

     and the glory are yours

     now and forever. Amen.
