Advent Activities

Advent is both a time of watching and waiting for the Christ Child.  It is not a passive waiting, however, but an active waiting.  At Second we prepare for God's great gift in four ways:

1.  Each Sunday we gather for worship, lighting the advent candles and singing the hymns of advent.  It is our practice to join in Holy Communion each Sunday where Christ meets us and strengthens us for the work to which we are called.

2.  During Advent there is a particular emphasis on our gifts to the Good Ground General Store, a food ministry.  Our children collect food during worship.

3.  A tradition at Second Church is the Gift of Giving.  Members are given the opportunity to offer funds to purchase gifts for Clark School children or to purchase a meal for the family clients of the Good Ground General Store in honor or memory of loved ones or friends.  During the season, there is a wrapping party for the children and a dinner for the clients of the GGGS.

4.  Early in the season, our choir prepares an Advent Vespers of appropriate anthems, hymns, and readings that help the community appreciate the uniqueness of this season of waiting.
