Couts Music Series

2009-2010 MUSIC SERIES

 

All concerts take place in the church's Sanctuary and are
presented free of charge to the community

 

September 27, 4pm        ORGAN RECITAL BY DOUGLAS CLEVELAND

Douglas Cleveland serves as music director for Plymouth Congregational Church and visiting professor at Washington University in Seattle, Washington.  Don't miss this electrifying opener to this season's Music Series.  Watch his hands and feet fly on a screen in the front of the sanctuary.  Co-sponsored with the St. Louis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.      

 

October 25, 4pm                             SILENT MOVIE- "GRANDMA'S BOY"

Harold Lloyd stars in this comedy from 1922.  This film was one of Lloyd's personal favorites out of his many silent films.  Andrew Peters provides organ accompaniment for this fun 61 minute film.

 

November 8, 4pm                          ARCHDIOCESAN HANDBELL CHOIR

The Archdiocesan Handbell Choir, under the direction of Karen Romeri, presents a delightful concert of music for handbells.  The program also features the Second Church Handbell Choir in compositions for two handbell choirs.

 

December 6, 4pm                                                            ADVENT VESPERS

A service of readings and hymns with choral, handbell, and organ music for the Advent season.  The service features the Second Church Choir and Second Church Handbell Choir.

 

January 17, 4pm      GOSPEL & SOUL: YAEL HANDELMAN, SOPRANO

Israeli-born soprano Yael Handelman is known not only for her musical and technical skill, but also for her unique style of programming.  This concert features art songs of Purcell, Ravel, Schubert, and many others as well as Israeli and Jewish music.

 

February 7, 4pm                              CAROLBETH TRUE JAZZ QUARTET

Carolbeth True was named "Best Jazz Artist" by the Riverfront Times in 2008.  This local, renowned quartet will highlight the compositions of African-American composers as we celebrate Black History Month.   

 

March 14, 4pm                                                             NOTEWORTHY DUO

Lisa Schroeder, flute, and Michael Nigro, guitar, combine their magnificent and highly-respected music talents in this duo.  Based out of California, this duo specializes in South American music.  

 

April 11, 4pm                                                                CHORALE CONCERT

The Second Church Chorale, soloists, and orchestra present an extended piece TBA.  Additional singers are welcome to join the chorale for this concert.  Contact the music office for further information.

 

May 2, 4pm                                ORGAN RECITAL BY ANDREW PETERS

Second Church's Pastoral Musician concludes the Music Series season in a varied program of organ works on the church's 60-rank Schantz organ.  The recital includes works of J.S. Bach, P.D.Q. Bach, Bonnet, Widor, and more.


DR. FRED COUTS was a beloved friend and member of Second Presbyterian Church.  He was a generous supporter of the music ministry of this church.  He established the Fred A. and Leota Couts Music Endowment Fund to further support the music ministry of Second Church.  In 2008, the Session voted to rename the Music Series the Couts Music Series to honor the contributions of this kind man.

 

Second Presbyterian Church presents concerts as part of its musical outreach to the community.  These concerts are presented free of charge through the support of the Fred A. and Leota Couts Music Endowment Fund.  Additional support comcs from the church's Music Fund.  If you wish to contribute to the Music Fund, please speak with the Pastoral Musician.
