Couts Music Series

2011-2012 COUTS MUSIC SERIES

 

All programs are presented free of charge to the community and take place
in the Sanctuary of Second Church. 

 

Sunday, October 23, 4:00 pm                                                                                  SILENT MOVIE

 

Harold Lloyd stars in the 1928 silent movie, "Speedy".  During this 86-minute comedy, Harold 'Speedy' Swift attempts to save the last horse-drawn trolley bus in New York City. The film includes some fantastic shots of New York City as well as an appearance by Babe Ruth.  Andrew Peters provides organ accompaniment during this humorous movie.

 

 

Sunday, November 6, 4:00 pm                                                          VITALI STRING QUARTET

 

Founded by 4 young Mexican musicians, the Vitali Quartet strives to promote the chamber music of Mexican composers.  The quartet won first prize in the 2004 Music Teachers National Association's Chamber Music Competition.  Past performance sites for the Vitali Quartet include the White House and Embassy of Mexico in Washington, DC; Museo del Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico; the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, CA; and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

 

 

Sunday, December 4, 4:00 pm                                                                         ADVENT VESPERS

 

Observe Advent during this service of readings, hymns, and music featuring JS Bach's "Magnificat".  The Second Church Chorale and Orchestra, the Second Church Handbell Choir, soloists, and conductor Andrew Peters offer music for this expectant season.  Additional singers are welcome to join the Chorale for this service.  Contact the music office for more information.

 

 

Saturday, January 21, 7:30 pm                                                          DOANE COLLEGE CHOIR

 

For more than a century, the choir of Doane College in Nebraska has inspired audiences.  In addition to annual national tours, the choir has embarked on seven international tours.  The Doane College Choir has sung for conventions of the United Church of Christ, Nebraska Music Educators Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.  Under the direction of Tom Trenney, the choir will present an engaging and varied program.

 

 

Sunday, February 12, 4:00 pm                                                                   CORNET CHOP SUEY

 

The Cornet Chop Suey Jazz Band contains trumpet, cornet, reeds, trombone, keyboard, bass, and drums.  Best known for a wide variety of styles, Cornet Chop Suey applies its own exciting style to traditional jazz, swing, and blues.  Every performance by this band is a high-energy presentation and always a memorable experience for the audience.

 

 

Sunday, March 25, 4:00 pm                                                                            CHANSON DU SOIR

 

As a chamber group, Chanson du Soir offers a unique soundscape.  Comprised of soprano Chelsea Camille and classical guitarist David Isaacs, Chanson du Soir performs an enticing fare of music.  Their alluring set includes an array of art songs and music by masterful new composer, Brian Madigan.  In performance, they offer historic background and delightful anecdotes about the composers, their lives, and their music.  Chanson du Soir is passionate about their music and love to share that enthusiasm with audiences.

 

 

Sunday, April 15, 4:00 pm                                         ORGAN RECITAL BY ANDREW PETERS

 

Second Church's Pastoral Musician concludes the 2011-2012 Couts Series with a dynamic organ recital on the church's 60-rank Schantz Organ.  Mr. Peters has received prizes in multiple organ competitions and has upcoming recitals at several venues including both St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and St. Philip's Cathedral in Atlanta.  The program includes works by J. S. Bach, Emma Lou Diemer, Hindemith, Karg-Elert, and more.  A screen in the front of the Sanctuary will enable the audience to view the performer's hands and feet. 

 


Organ FacadeDR. FRED COUTS was a generous supporter of the music ministry of Second Presbyterian Church.  He established the Fred A. and Leota Couts Music Endowment Fund to further support the music ministry of Second Church. 

 

The Couts Music Series, name in memory of the generosity of Dr. Couts, offers a variety of free programs to the community each year.  Additional  support comes from the church's Music Fund.  If you wish to contribute to the Music Fund, please speak with the Pastoral Musician.
